Description:

Solanum lycopersicum, or tomato, is a major crop first domesticated in South America. Tomato is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) which includes crops such as peppers, eggplants, and potato, as well as medicinal plants such as belladonna (Atropa belladona).

In addition to use as a experimental model fruit development, tomato has been extensively used to study branching, leaf morphology and disease resistance.
