Description:

Solanum lycopersicum, or tomato, is a major crop first domesticated in South America. Tomato is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) which includes crops such as peppers, eggplants, and potato, as well as medicinal plants such as belladonna (Atropa belladona).

In addition to its use as a experimental model for fruit development, tomato has been extensively used to study branching, leaf morphology and disease resistance.
